The Elizabeth Ann Seton Program was established to offer
volunteers a structured way to stand with mothers who are marginalized
by their choice to give birth to their child.
The
first Elizabeth Ann Seton Program was established in Alton, Illinois in
1998. Another program was implemented in Ashland, Illinois in 2000.
The organization now serves families in 4 counties of central Illinois, including the communities of Springfield, Jacksonville, Beardstown, Chatham, and Litchfield. In addition, school based teen mom programs are held in Springfield, Jacksonville and Beardstown.
Each program offers monthly
educational sessions on practical topics such as nutrition, parenting,
preventing familty violence, job interviewing skills,
and household budgeting. Participants have the opportunity to be paired
with a trained volunteer mentor for ongoing support and encouragement. Referrals are made to other social service agencies if needed.
